US school districts pilot AI tutors as primary instructors in understaffed classrooms

The case for

A patient one-on-one tutor for every kid could close brutal gaps where no teacher is available.

The case against

Kids learn to be human from humans, and a screen mentor can't model the thing school is secretly for.

Bernie Sanders wants the public to own half of Big AI

The Human Take

I love Bernie, but I don't want the government to OWN this thing. I want it to REFEREE it. The question isn't who gets a check. It's whether the ref can still throw a flag once he owns the team. So you tell me. Go vote.

The case for

If the public owns a piece of the thing reshaping our entire lives, that funds the guardrails, puts citizens on the board, and shares the upside with us instead of just the investors. Bernie's American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act would do exactly that, a one-time tax paid in stock into a public fund.

The case against

Ownership is not accountability. The lever we actually want is a referee with clean hands. The moment the government owns and profits from this, does it keep its hand on the safety lever, or quietly start protecting the stock price? And whose pocket does that money really end up in?

Touch-free robot massage, on demand in real spas (Aescape)

The Human Take

A robot can find the knot. It cannot be happy you finally booked the appointment. I genuinely do not know if that trade is worth it. So you tell me.

The case for

Access. It is available at midnight, it never burns out, and for someone with real anxiety about being touched by a stranger, or a history that makes their body a trigger, it might be the only way they ever get bodywork at all.

The case against

Engineer out the awkwardness and you engineer out the person. The humanity was in choosing the right provider and in the relationship that grows from it. Care without a carer.

California signed on as the largest US government AI deployment in history at half price, putting vetted AI to work across state services

The Human Take

A government using AI to actually serve people faster, in the open and under contract, is the boring good version we rarely get to celebrate.

Insilico Medicine's AI-designed CDK12/13 inhibitors show promise against treatment-resistant cancers

The Human Take

Relationships

Eldera, an AI that matches adults over sixty with kids for weekly video calls

The Human Take

Finally. An AI that hands you an actual human being instead of a glowing rectangle. It does not pretend to be your friend, it goes and finds you one. Ninety-four percent of the matches keep talking, most for over a year. That is the machine pointed at the bridge instead of the mirror. And yes, our fuck yes had to come from a few weeks back, because everything since was creepy or nihilistic. Source: McKnight's / Eldera program data.

Systems

AI salon receptionists handle booking, scheduling, and payments

The Human Take

Automate the friction, never the touch. Hand the robot the calendar and give the human back to the human. It cuts salon overhead by roughly 40 percent and kills the phone tag that drags a stylist away from the chair. That is the thumb on the right side of the scale.

Experian warns 2026 is AI fraud's 'tipping point' after consumers lost $12.5B to fraud in 2024

The Human Take

Three seconds of a loved one's voice scraped from social media is enough to fake a panic call and drain a lifetime of savings.

Systems

A frontier AI model's safety was defeated in about two days and its secret rulebook leaked

The Human Take

This is not a hacker story, it is an Anthropic story. The most responsible kid in the room, the one that publicly scolds the reckless players, still shipped its most powerful model with a safety that held for two days, because out-building the competition mattered more, even to them, than protecting us. Nobody in this story is evil. Everybody is just swimming too fast to stop. If the good guys can't make themselves slow down, the race itself is the thing to fear. The government pulled the model. Good.

Grok generated an estimated 3 million sexualized images in 11 days, about 23,000 of them children

The Human Take

Same trick as the beauty mirror, a machine reading a human body, turned all the way to evil. One sells you shame. This manufactures violation, a child sexualized by a machine roughly every 41 seconds. There is no other pan on this scale. Fuck no. Source: CCDH, the Center for Countering Digital Hate.
